Tumblr Says No to Ads, Yes to “Sponsor Products”

Despite statements to the contrary from its CEO, Tumblr is now looking for a few good advertisers…er, Sponsors.

The microblogging platform and social networking website recently announced that it is planning on rolling out two new sponsor products:

  • RADAR – Sponsor placements will appear on the right-hand side of the user dashboard
  • SPOTLIGHT – Sponsor placements will appear as a large display above spotlighted members on the Spotlight, which is basically Tumblr’s member directory. (aka the area where members search for other users to follow on Tumblr.)

Interested? Here are the ground rules:

  1. Minimum spend of $25,000. A steep price for some, but this should help to reduce the amount of fodder (read: crap) appearing on their site.
  2. Approval from Tumblr. As stated on their website “We’re looking for the world’s greatest marketers and media companies to help us raise the bar for creative advertising on the web.” Tumblr has made it clear that they want sponsors to focus on strong creative that is in line with the overall Tumblr experience. In short, it’s going to take more than a hefty budget to get your brand on Tumblr.

While I love the inherent exclusivity factor here, I’m interested to see whether the “approval process” proves to be a benefit or a hindrance to the overall sponsorship process. Either way, kudos to Tumblr for taking smart, calculated steps in their first foray into advertising sponsor products.
