Does practicality appeal to the affluent?

Porsche is currently testing out that theory with a new 30-second TV spot entitled “Versatility”. In the spot, Porsche owners are seen completing normal, daily tasks in their luxury sports cars – from throwing mulch in the trunk at the hardware store, to picking the kids up from school, to driving in the snow (a favorite of us New Englanders). Scenes that are standard B-roll in almost any SUV commercial become an almost reasonable proposal for purchasing an $80K vehicle for everyday use. Not a bad move by the folks at Porsche who are speaking to a growing number of conspicuously inconspicuous affluent consumers who want to be seen as making conscientious, non-ostentatious purchases… but still want to be seen.
