Valentine's Day retro ad

Valentine’s Day Retro Ad of the Week: Whitman’s Chocolates, 1951

Oh, Valentine’s Day! The one day of the year it seems like everyone is cuddling up to that special someone or, in this case, a box of chocolate. There’s no ignoring the almost full-page photo of the young lovers. This ad wants us to believe that maybe if we spoiled our significant other with a Whitman’s Sampler, that we, too, could be in romantic paradise. Remember — whether you’re trying to impress either your new love interest or longtime sweetheart, “A woman never forgets the man who remembers.”

So no matter if you’re spending the holiday with your better half or a half-bottle of wine, don’t forget to take some time to spread a little love in your life —perhaps with a box of Whitman’s?

After all, as the copy says:

Of all the many, many ways upon this lovers’ day of days

To ask of her ‘Will you be mine?’…

Best messenger your love to voice,

To her the fair one of your choice

Let Whitman’s be your Valentine!

P.S. A woman never forgets the man who remembers.

FUN FACT: Whitman’s, established by a 19-year-old Stephen Whitman in 1842, became one of the best-selling candy companies to maintain a longstanding tradition of supporting American servicemen during wartime. During World War II,  the women who worked Whitman’s production line would slip little hand-written notes of encouragement into boxes sent to servicemen around the world.
