Did all the celebration on the night after the big win make national jewelry retailer Jared use the wrong logo in their email Tuesday morning?
In an email promoting officially licensed collegiate-inspired jewelry items, Jared used the former UCONN Huskies athletics logo, which was officially retired in April 2013 as part of an entire rebranding effort for the University’s Division of Athletics.
The brand overhaul, which was marred by much controversy among fans, was carried out by athletic apparel partner, Nike free of charge to the University. Since last spring, UCONN has phased out all usage of the old Huskies logo and used their new brand identity as seen here…
So is Jared the latest perpetrator of logo misuse, or do they not even know that the logo has changed (a common issue when sports teams change logos after years of use)? Fans and affiliate brands alike become used to the logo, and see it synonymous with the team it stands for, or in this case an entire University.
This isn’t the first time that the incorrect logo has been used in a promotion involving a sports team, but the sheer fact that in this case, UCONN had just won the National Championship in NCAA Men’s Basketball (and there was much ado about the then upcoming Women’s championship), you would think the folks at Jared would have done their research and made the switch before sending this out to their customers.
The bigger issue is that a major national brand does not even know the correct logo for the team’s merchandise that they’re selling. It makes you wonder how many other retailers use the wrong team logos.
Regardless of logo issues, we are pretty excited about the UCONN wins and would like to congratulate our Connecticut Huskies on winning both the Men’s and Women’s National titles this season!
