Tourism Marketing / Retro Ad of the Week: Newfoundland & Labrador, 1969

The tourism marketing formula is typically this: show an ad with waves, palm trees, forests, or some other form of natural beauty. Maybe a couple or a family having a a good time. Or on the bad end of the spectrum, a montage of all of the above with a few close-up dining shots thrown in the mix. But back in 1969, Newfoundland & Labrador took a different approach. Promote the friendliness of the locals. An interesting angle, for sure (aside from the fact that I wouldn’t classify Canadian as a race). But given just how beautiful this area of the world is (see current website snapshot beneath the ad), I can’t help but wonder if they missed the boat by not including a beauty shot.

FUN FACT: Newfoundland is the proud owner of its very own time zone. (Source: GreenwichMeanTime.com)
