The Ads of Christmas Past: The Grebe Synchrophase (1926)

The what? The Synchrophase, perhaps the first luxury, battery-operated radio on the market. Born out of the Broadcast Boom of the early 20’s, the Grebe Synchrophase wasn’t marketed until mid-1924, just as demand for a better performing radio began to rise. Prior to that, radio companies that had previously produced radios for International Morse communication jumped on the chance to market their basic-design amateur radios as broadcast receivers, but there was no radio on the market yet that was designed specifically for broadcast reception. Enter the Synchrophase, the only high-performance model at the time, fronted by a rich, faux mahogany panel and diamond shaped escutcheons. Here is a Christmas ad for the Synchrophase from 1926:

This is how it looks in color:

Those of you who have been to our offices will be surprised to know that the Synchrophase is not among Chuck’s collection of old radios in our conference room.

If you’re an old radio buff or antique collector and want to learn more about the game-changing Synchrophase, you can find out pretty much anything you ever wanted to know here.
