Super Bowl Advertising / Retro Ad of the Week: Aqua Velva, 1971

Running contests for consumers to win tickets to the biggest sporting event of the year has long been a marketing strategy of  big brands, most recently Bud Light and the cruise ship hotel currently docked on the Hudson River.

Back in 1971, Aqua Velva After Shave ran a sweepstakes to “take your own team to the Super Bowl” with an all-inclusive trip for eight to New Orleans. Though the men’s cologne brand didn’t incorporate social media or an augmented reality app into their campaign, it was apparently successful enough to repeat several times over the years.

Here’s the full copy:

Here’s what’ll happen if you win. You’ll pick seven of your best buddies and invite them on a trip they’ll never forget. Your team will take off for New Orleans the Thursday before the Super Bowl on a private Pan Am “Fan Jet Falcon” reserved just for the eight of you. You’ll have luxurious rooms and fantastic meals at the Bourbon Orleans Hotel, and we’ll give you $1,000 in pocket money to sprinkle around town. On Sunday, when you take your team to the Super Bowl, there’ll be eight super seats waiting for you. And, to wrap up three unforgettable days, we’ll fly you all back on the same private jet so that on Monday morning you’ll be able to tell everyone else all about it.

Excited for the Super Bowl (or at least the ads)? Come back here to vote for your favorite commercials during Sunday night’s game and tune in to WTNH Monday morning (5, 6 and 7 am) for interviews with our own Chuck Mascola.
