Sexist Mother’s Day Ad: GE Portable Dishwasher, 1961

Having a conscience is awfully distracting, so watching your wife work her fingers to the bone washing dishes by hand just won’t do. It’s time to free yourself from these feelings with the perfect Mother’s Day gift: the GE Portable Dishwasher!

It’s difficult to pick out exactly which part of this sexist Mother’s Day ad gets my blood boiling most, perhaps it’s the unforgivably misogynistic threat to take the machine away once she’s gotten “used to her freedom.” Here’s to hoping this guy picked up a sponge to lend a hand before earning himself a ride in the spin cycle.

Full Body Copy:

Come now, fellows, don’t you suffer pangs of conscience when you see the little lady swamped by a pile of dishes?

All right, before the feeling dies down, let’s do something about it. Let’s get Momma a General Electric Mobile Maid this Mother’s Day. Give her 30 days to get used to her freedom. Then, when she refuses to part with it, go back to your General Electric dealer (see dealer listing and certificate on opposite page) and he will give you $25.

No ordinary dishwasher, Mobile Maid. We daresay it can outwash a mother. But never let on we said so. Mobile Maid with Power Shower washes two ways – from the bottom up, from the top down. If it doesn’t come off in a Mobile Maid, it’s part of the design of the dish. And Flushaway Drain means no hand rinsing.

Mobile Maid is portable, so you don’t have to rip your kitchen apart or pay costly installation charges.

Go then, you emancipators, to any of the General Electric dealers listed opposite. And take him up on his $25 offer.
