I’m in the market for a car, and living in the northeast, Subaru is often one of the first recommendations I get. Thanks to their recent ad campaigns, Subaru has carved a very clear definition of its brand in my mind, one of practicality and functionality. Sex appeal? Not so much. Until I saw this 1973 Subaru retro ad.
Granted, this appeared in an issue of Playboy Magazine, and sexist car ads were extremely common in the 1970’s, but I still searched a few extra times to make sure the ad was for real. Have you ever been surprised by a familiar brand’s new (or past) advertising direction? Share your thoughts in the Comments!
FUN FACT: The stars in the Subaru logo represent the divisions that combined to form the Fuji Heavy Industries company, their arrangement resembling the Pleiades star cluster. (Source: Car-Brand-Names.com)
