Retro Ad of the Week: TWA “Foreign Accent” Flights, 1968

By the end of a 6 hour flight, like that from New York to Los Angeles, most people are squirming in their seats with boredom. Now imagine how boring that long-distance flight would be without the movies and in-flight wifi provided by airlines today. In 1967, Trans World Airlines, a major American airline at the time, attempted to provide a solution.

The campaign, considered to be one of the industry’s largest at the time for a single promotion, didn’t catch on, lasting from April 1967 to October of the same year. However, it was likely cost, not conscience of the blatant sexism in advertising (or the program as a whole, for that matter), that ushered in its demise. The program demanded preparation of four unique meals as well as custom magazines and menus in each language to fit the themes.

FUN FACT: Over the years, uniforms for TWA flight attendants were redesigned by several famous names in the fashion world, including Valentino from 1971 to 1974, and Ralph Lauren from 1978 to 2001. (Source: Wikipedia)
