Great fitting shoes are a must for growing boys and girls, and apparently little pilgrims, too. After buying the rights to the Buster Brown Comic in 1904, Brown Shoe Company began using the character as the mascot for its children’s line, as seen below in this 1919 ad from the Saturday Evening Post.
Buster became a part of nearly every holiday for the shoe brand, including Thanksgiving. And while this ad’s copy does not make direct mention of the holiday, the provocative insertion of a turkey, along with Buster Brown’s tomahawk and signature menacing grin suggest that these little rascals are preparing for the feast to come. FUN FACT: Operating under the name Brown Shoe Company for 134 years, the company just rebranded as Caleres in early 2015. (Source: BusinessWire)
