Retro Ad of the Week: Miller, 1952

This 1952 retro ad targets a surprising audience for the golf community. The traditional gentleman’s game, in that time, was marked by men enjoying a cold beverage after 18 grueling holes. However, this ad goes out to the ladies. Despite the excitement of seeing a fully clothed women in a beer and golf ad, reading the fine print takes you back to the time period, focusing completely on fashion instead of athleticism. After the initial surprise of seeing a female golfer with beer in a 1952 ad, it is clear that this ad was no exception to the rule.

FUN FACT: Women were first allowed to play golf in the 1550s when Mary Queen of Scots commissioned a new course at St. Andrews.  Despite the early evolution of women’s golf, the Ladies Professional Golf Association was not established until 1950. (Source: Levo League)
