worlds fair event advertising

Retro Ad of The Week: New York World’s Fair, 1964

We may be used to monorails from Disney and similar tourist attractions, but back in 1964 they were positioned differently. Exciting. Thrilling. Unforgettable. It makes sense. After all, event advertising needs to be all about what’s new this year. And the 1960s were characterized by rapid advances in technology and science. There’s a reason the decade was known as the “Space Age.” There was great interest in the futuristic aesthetic, making the suspended Monorail at the 1964 New York World’s Fair a particularly appealing concept. This modern-looking mode of transportation looks especially innovative when cutting across a blue and purple space-like sky. It creates an aura of excitement surrounding the new developments at the World’s Fair. They even created a catchy phrase to promote it: “See the fair from the air.”

FUN FACT: American Machine and Foundry spent more than $5 million to construct this monorail for the 1964 World’s Fair, which would cost at least $35 million today. [SOURCE: NYWF64.com]
