When Disneyland was built in just one year on 160 acres of land in Anaheim, California, not even Walt Disney himself could have guessed how successful the amusement park would soon be.
Despite a disastrous opening day, the park’s popularity began to grow, eventually earning the title of “happiest place on Earth.” Thousands started flocking to the park to see their favorite characters, stroll down Main Street, U.S.A., and take a spin on the teacups in the afternoon sun.
But this 1959 “Disney after dark” ad highlights that there’s just as much to do at Disneyland even after the sun goes down. Let’s take a closer look at the copy, below.
Hear the spirited Young Men from New Orleans aboard the Mark Twain riverboat! Listen to Monette Moore sing Dixieland classics! Dance to the music of the popular Elliot Brothers at Plaza Gardens! Sing or sweet – they’re a real musical treat! Watch Tahitian Fire Dancers go into their act at the Pavilion! See the greatest Polynesian pageant this side of the Islands! Thrill to your favorite rides and attractions! Speed 2 ½ miles on the new Monorail – and stop off at the Disneyland Hotel!
The dark silhouettes of an excited crowd moving toward Cinderella’s castle, framed by fireworks, is a perfect picture of park-goers abiding by the headline, “Let the wonders of Disneyland do wonders for you!”
FUN FACT: When Disneyland first opened its gates in 1955, it had a total of 18 attractions, and admission only cost $1. (Source: Business Insider)
