Retro Ad of the Week: TWA, 1953

Most people equate feminism and the time of the working woman to the 1960’s, but interestingly enough this female “empowerment” ad is from the 1950’s. Unlike other ads in this decade known for misogynistic representations of women as simple housewives, TWA was talking to women who actually might want a life beyond the kitchen.

FUN FACT: In 1934, when Roosevelt cancelled commercial airmail contracts, TWA president Jack Frye piloted the last commercial airmail delivery across the country in just over 13 hours, which back then was a record-breaking trip. (Source: PBS)
