Retro Ad of the Week: The Park Lane Hotel, 1984

You want to feel taken care of and safe when traveling, right? Especially when you’re in a new, unknown place and you have formal events to attend. What would happen, if, heaven forbid, you left something at home? You need to know you’ll receive the hospitality you deserve. At least, that’s what this retro hotel ad from 1984 wants you to know.

At least, that’s Leona Helmsley’s angle: The Park Lane Hotel offers “letter-perfect” luxury – right down to anticipatory services.  This ad uses a typed letter from the Queen of Mean herself to illustrate the Park Lane’s high standards when it comes to hospitality. It not only expresses the luxury experience the Park Lane offers but makes living like royalty – even if just for a night – seem mainstream. What better way to convince people of excellent customer service than that?

Fun Fact:

The Helmsley’s holdings included as many as 125 properties in New York and several other cities. Their empire included several hotels, skyscrapers, residential lofts, and landmark buildings like the Empire State Building and the Flatiron Building. (Source: Reuters)
