Retro Ad of the Week: Rolex, 1964

Associating the iconic watch brand with renowned French actor, singer and entertainer Maurice Chevalier seems like a logical choice on paper.  What makes the choice of Chevalier somewhat interesting is that he had a known reputation as a penny-pincher – an odd paring for for a luxury watchmaker, for sure.

FUN FACT:  “Rolex” is actually thought to be an entirely made up name with no real meaning or derivation. It is believed that company founder Hans Wilsdorf simply wanted a name that was easily pronounced in any language. (Source:  Wikipedia)**
