Retro Ad of the Week: Piaget Watches, 1983

While the contrast of the luxurious gold Piaget against a backdrop of tanned skin and rich brown and blue accents works well, did you happen to notice that the watch itself is actually upside down in this ad? Odd.

Moreover, while it is not entirely uncommon for luxury goods to have a “spokesperson”, the inset picture of polo Hall-of-Famer Tommy Wayman feels forced. And the cowboy hat? Maybe they were going for that whole “J.R. Ewing” feel – it was 1983 after all…

FUN FACT: In its 2008 jewelry brand study, The Luxury Institute ranked Piaget as the 6th most prestigious jewelry brand.

If Tommy wears his watch on his right wrist, as he appears to do in the picture, the watch may not be upside down.

In our new survey of luxury and affluent consumers, we found Rolex was the most frequently named brand for best quality and most prestige. Piaget was tied for fifth place with Omega for most prestige.
