Retro Ad of the Week: London Olympic Games, 1948

At this same time 64 years ago, Olympic athletes gathered in London, England to put their hard work, determination, and physical ability to the test – the last time the Olympic Games were held in London. Until now.

Designed by Walter Herz, this was the official poster for the 1948 games. Despite the economic climate following WWII, 100,000 free copies were printed and distributed in Great Britain to the governing bodies of the seventeen sports included in the games, travel and tourist agencies, airlines, town clerks, and directors of education.

Check out the official posters of this year’s games, designed by leading artists in the UK.

FUN FACT: The 1948 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XIV Olympiad, were the first Summer Olympics held since the 1936 games in Berlin, having been on hiatus due to WWII. London is the only city to have hosted the games three times: in 1908, 1948, and 2012. (Source: VisitLondon.com)
