Retro Ad of the Week: J&B Scotch (1966)

The silver platter.

The delicate reference to cost.

Ahh, yes: J&B goes for the time-honored strategy of positioning a product as a step above the competition – whether it actually is or not, is left for the consumer to find out.

FUN FACT #1: “J&B” stands for Justerini & Brooks, named after Giacomo Justerini, the man who founded the company in 1749, and Alfred Brooks, who purchased it in 1831.

FUN FACT #2: J&B was Truman Capote’s favorite drink. When ordering it at his local liquor store, he would request “Justerini & Brooks”. If the store clerk didn’t recognize the name, he would take his business elsewhere.
