Retro Ad of the Week: Greyhound, 1957

There’s “one sure way” to prepare for the Spring season ahead…and that’s with a Greyhound bus trip. At least, that’s what this retro ad wants you to think.

This ad looks and feels like spring, right down to the blissed out, non-arguing brother and sister. It’s a perfect representation of we want spring to feel like. And the truth is, no one can deny the giddiness in the air when the sun starts to shine. This advertisement uses that to its advantage. Using imagery that sparks that wishful thinking, it appeals to consumers and gets them planning their next spring getaways.

While buses may not spark the same feelings for you in 2019, in 1957, a Greyhound Bus meant you were going somewhere. And the hook in this campaign?  The highest, most magnificent, standards in freeway travel.

After all, the copy states:

You can plan with confidence when you choose Greyhound for Spring trips, on business or pleasure, to any part of America. You know you’re getting the highest standards ever established in highway travel – plus fares that are far lower than other forms of transportation (a fraction of the cost of driving your car). And you’re sure of the dependability and service that have made Greyhound Today’s Best Buy in Travel!”

FUN FACT: Greyhound Bus is the official bus of the Harlem Globetrotters, spreading Globetrotter magic across North America every year. Source: BusinessWire
