Retro Ad, Labor Day Edition: Pepsi, 1957

Well now!

I think this retro Pepsi ad is about golf, but something tells me there’s a wee bit of innuendo. Is it just my jaded brain?

True, the rest of the copy is illegible. Perhaps it goes on to explain that the woman’s aggressive stance is merely her showing off her scorecard. And maybe the man’s delighted expression has nothing to do with his current view, but rather a satisfying round on the links followed by a Pepsi. But the headline “Light Refreshment Scores on Labor Day” coupled with the artwork tells me a different story.

No matter how you look at it, “Pepsi-Cola refreshes without filling,” so you can delve into your next Labor Day activity completely recharged — whatever that might be (wink-wink).

FUN FACT: Pepsi was first called “Brad’s Drink” — after it’s inventor, Caleb Bradham. It was renamed in 1898 after the kola nuts used in the recipe and the dyspepsia it aimed to cure. Source: Wikipedia.
