Retro Ad: Cunard Cruise Lines, 1953

For years, cruise line advertising has run the gamut from boring photos of the ship on the water to emotionally charged ads with people reveling in their vacation time. This one from Cunard is one-of-a-kind. It features two merry couples linking arms like Dorothy and her crew on the yellow brick road. The copy reads:

You may step a merry mile… or inhale the clean salt air from the comfort of your chair… you may linger over sumptuous meals prepared by internationally trained chefs… you may relax in peace or dance the evening through.

Aboard a Cunarder your voyage to Europe is a brilliant holiday in itself, to be enjoyed to the utmost! You live awhile in a festive world apart… a world which, in both senses, transports you.

Here you discover gaiety, comfort and relaxation such as no other form of travel provides.

FUN FACT: In 1840, Cunard’s first cruise ship, the Britannia, made her maiden voyage from Liverpool to Boston. Passengers included 63 guests, 93 crew members, and one cow so that all onboard could enjoy fresh milk. (Source: CruiseWeb)
