The rumor mill was abuzz this weekend with two very different topics: a baby and a smartwatch. Not to worry, there’s no cheesy punchline tying them together, but rather two brands working behind the scenes to deliver impressive real-time social media strategies.
Try as they might, very little can be kept secret when you’re a member of the Royal Family. When Kate Middleton and Prince William announced on Monday that they were expecting their second child, they were showered with the typical pomp and circumstance — despite the fact that everyone already knew. Still, waiting until the official statement is made is a good move for everyone outside the tabloids.
Nissan UK followed this code of honor, yet likely took full advantage of the rumored pregnancy to create a sweet, poignant tweet, posted just 7 minutes after the announcement was made.
Not to be beaten at their own game, Oreo, the unofficial king of real-time social media strategies, had their eye on Tuesday’s anticipated Apple event. With everyone from brand enthusiasts to app designers hanging on Twitter updates to stay informed, Oreo had the perfect platform, and when Apple announced the launch of their rumored smartwatch, Oreo was ready with a clever tweet.
Though the mock up was pretty far off (here is a look at the new tech), the delivery was spot on. And thanks to months of speculation about the announcement, Oreo likely had ample time to prepare this real-time engagement.
With or without months of preparation, successful real-time social media strategies are all about staying in-tune with what audiences care about. Participation on social media need not be limited to your brand’s core audience, though care must be taken to avoid insensitive or inappropriate posts that may be deleted, but likely won’t be forgotten. Getting your brand’s voice in on the conversations is a great way to connect with your followers, and discover new ones.
