Retro Ad of the Week: Yellowstone National Park, 1938

With its 3,458 square miles of lakes, mountains, forests, canyons, rivers, and even geothermal features, Yellowstone is quite the draw even without advertising efforts. A series of national park advertising posters, including the one below, were consigned between the mid-1930’s and 1943 to promote the country’s national parks and other assets, create artwork for public buildings, and help provide work for artists struggling during the Great Depression. If you have ever visited Yellowstone and seen Old Faithful in person, you know that it is truly impossible to do it justice in drawn or photographic form. Nevertheless, we love this vintage depiction.

FUN FACT: While the recognizable arrowhead has been the official logo of the National Park Service since 1951, brand standards regarding its proper use were not developed until 2000. (Source: National Park Service)
