sexist advertising from the 50s

Special Mother’s Day Retro Ad: Zippo, 1954

There’s nothing like a little sexism to honor Mom on her special day. Back in 1954, Zippo ran this ad that highlighted Mom’s lack of capability and touched a little bit on her vanity as well. If they ran it today, Moms wouldn’t need Zippos – we’d head to the main headquarters with full torches and teach the Zippo CEO a lesson or two.

FUN FACT: Zippo is such an iconic American brand that there are an estimated 4 million Zippo collectors across the country, and millions more around the world. There’s even a Zippo Museum, complete with a 40-foot “flickering” lighter above the entranceway.  [Source: Zippo.com]
