One of the biggest hurdles in marketing outdoor summer attractions is locking in repeat visitors year after year. In this 1980 ad, Butlin’s Resorts faced the challenge head on with their tagline, “Butlin It Once and You’ll Do It Again.” Whether or not any old brand can turn their name into a verb is debatable (we can’t all be Google), so we can only wonder if it worked 36 years ago. My guess would be no, although their efforts to court return visitors was certainly smart from a strategic standpoint.
FUN FACT: In 1962, John Lennon and Paul McCartney visited Butlin’s Skegness to check out the band Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, and in particular, the band’s drummer: Ringo Starr. (Source: Butlin’s website)
