Hotel Magazine Ads / Retro Ad of the Week: Rio Othon Palace, 1976

Badvertising as it could only be done in 1976. Yes, sex sells. But it sells better when it’s well-designed. Even without the likes of Photoshop and InDesign, it was possible to create beautiful hotel ads in the 70s. This just isn’t one of them.

Full body copy:

There the Rio Othon Palace Stands, not on the fringe of, or tantalizingly near Copacabana Beach, but right on it, commanding full view of all the gaiety and excitement of the best known beach in the world. And virtually within touching distance of everything that’s made Rio great. Posh boutiques, nightlife, gourmet restaurants, all the glamor and splendor of a fabulous city. Put yourself in the thick of where it’s all happening. Remember. You came to Rio for Copacabana Beach. Don’t settle for less.

FUN FACT: Last year around this time, Usain Bolt attempted to beat his all-time record for the 150m (14.35 sec) along the length of Copacabana Beach. While he did not beat the record that day, he did win the race. Perhaps he’ll break his own record in 2016.
