On October 16, US Airways officially merged with American Airlines, ending the brand’s 76-year lifespan. From a creative standpoint, US Airways has historically struggled to generate compelling, eye-catching ads, despite several rebrands over the years (more on that below). Case in point being this bland USAir ad (its third brand incarnation) from 1984.
The history of US Airways is a long and rocky one. It started out in 1939 as All American Aviation, a national airmail carrier, before being transformed into a passenger airline under the name All American Airways ten years later. And the changes, renamings, and rebrandings continued, as you can see in the brochures below.
And while US Airways has now flown its last flight and retired a history of bland ads (“USAir begins with you,” anyone?), its new parent company has had its fair share of advertising faux pas, too.
FUN FACT: Over the past 14 years, the United States’ 10 major domestic airlines have been minimized to 4 due to mergers. Today, the remaining Big 4 are comprised of American, Delta, United, and Southwest Airlines. (Source: CNN)
