How (More) Halloween Candy Brands Got Their Names

Kit-Kat-Wrapper-Small Kit Kat originated in late 17th century London when a literary club met at a pie shop owned by pastry chef Christoppher Catling. The group was called the Kit Kat Club, nicknamed after the pastry chef.

 

Twizzlers-Wrapper-SmallTwizzlers is one of the United States’ oldest candy brands. Named as such in 1845 by Young & Smylie because it was a twisted confectionary candy.

 

 

smartiesSmarties – “To smart” means to have one’s face involuntarily pucker which is exactly what happens when you eat this fruit-flavored tablet candy.

 

 

laffy taffy Laffy Taffy – The name refers to both the taffy texture and silliness of the candy (each wrapper having a joke inside, usually sent in by children). This candy is branded by Wonka which is dedicated to producing fun, innovative, high-quality confections for all candy lovers.

 

Jolly_Ranchers Jolly Rancher – Founded in 1949, the company was named “Jolly Rancher” to communicate its brand of western hospitality.

 

 

Reese's-PB-Cups-Wrapper-SmallReese’s Peanut Butter Cups – This candy was named after its creator, Harry Burnett Reese, who was inspired by Hershey. He left the dairy farming business to start his own candy business in 1928.

 

The “Hubba Bubba” Bubble Tape name comes from the phrase “Hubba Hubba” used by soldiers during World War II to express approval.
