Halloween Advertising / Retro Ad of the Week: 3M Scotch Tape, 1961

Anyone who’s ever gone the creative route for their Halloween costume knows that tape almost always enters the mix at some point (usually in a moment of desperation). In this retro Halloween ad, 3M Scotch Tape made a smart decision by selling their product just before consumers started to think about the real reason we need Scotch tape around the house – Christmas. The amount of tape used for masks and decorations doesn’t hold a candle to the gift wrapping numbers. Doesn’t mean you can’t convince consumers of that though. Here’s to a very happy and sticky Hallowthankschrismukkah.

FUN FACT: “Scotch” Tape got its name when its inventor Richard Drew used the then derogatory term, aligned with stinginess, to describe the makers of insufficiently sticky masking tape. The name, well, stuck. (Source: Wikipedia)
