Ever dream of sitting back and relaxing, sipping fine champagne and dining on French caviar, or perhaps a nice piece of fresh pan-seared branzino with lobster? Now imagine doing all of this while traveling 30,000 feet above the earth and you’ll have a glimpse into the “flying luxury hotel,” a fully-customized, 52 seat, Boeing 757-200ER jet from luxury hotel brand Four Seasons.
The Four Seasons jet concept isn’t new to the luxury market. The luxury lifestyle brand has been flying under the TSC World Travel (a Seattle, WA-based luxury travel company) moniker since 2012, but as of this past April, the jet sports new Four Seasons branding. The aircraft itself underwent a major remodeling (estimates far exceed $15 million) which converted the plane’s 233 standard seats into 52 “lie-flat” seats stretching 6 ½ feet each, making for a more comfortable flight anywhere in the world.
The level of service that discerning travelers have come to expect from Four Seasons’ 94 hotels and resorts worldwide is the same attention to detail that has taken shape on the airline. A minimum of 21 Four Seasons trained crew are on-board for each flight, including a concierge and an executive chef. Guests even receive complimentary items upon embarking, including Bose noise canceling headphones, an iPad Air, Bulgari toiletries, and even a Mongolian cashmere blanket for their comfort.
So how much does all this cost? The 24-day “Around the World Tour”, which starts this August and takes travelers to nine different stops including New York, the Maldives, Tokyo, and the Serengeti, will run you a cool $132,000 per person.
Sure, there are larger, private bedrooms on commercial airlines such as Etihad’s one-bedroom suites ($21,000 per trip) and Singapore Airlines’ suites on their new A380 aircraft. But neither of these brings the marketability, brand power, or global recognition that the Four Seasons name offers to the luxury airline market. This is truly something unique that hasn’t been seen anywhere else around the globe, and has fully established Four Seasons as a luxury lifestyle brand to be reckoned with. It will be interesting to see if other brands follow suit, or keep their feet planted firmly on the ground.
