Remember when iPhones only worked with AT&T? Back in 2009, Verizon decided to have a little fun with that fact, relegating the iPhone to the likes of a “Charlie-in-the-box” and a water gun that only squirts jelly – a (gasp) misfit toy. Eventually, whether fueled by this commercial or consumer demand, Apple and Verizon joined forces, and iPhones were saved from the Island of Misfit Toys. The Verizon Misfit Toys commercial worked so well because it combined a message that directly differentiated the brand from its lead competitor with a scene from a Christmas movie that kids have held dear ever since 1964.
