Last year’s NFL season kicked off with a new State Farm Discount Double Check commercial that featured two familiar funnymen, and the quarterback of the Green Bay Packers.

Being a huge Saturday Night Live fan, I immediately recognized the two men Aaron Rogers was sandwiched between on the plane. The Bill Swerski’s Superfans made their debut on SNL in 1991 starring Joe Mantegna (host) and comedic legends Chris Farley, Mike Myers, and Rob Smigel. It became an instant classic and appeared multiple times throughout that season.
The 2014 NFL season is now underway, and I noticed that State Farm was at it again. Still starring Aaron Rogers, the spots have introduced two more SNL familiar faces.

Hans and Franz muscled their way onto the commercial giving Aaron Rogers a new work out routine for his upcoming season. Kevin Nealon and Dana Carvey graced us with these characters in 1987, appearing countless times on the show, even once with Arnold Swarzenegger.
Even with the dynamic personalities of beloved SNL alums, recurring characters in advertising campaigns have the tendency to get stale, especially, it seems, in insurance advertising (we’re looking at you, Geico Gecko). By featuring a slew of recognizable faces, State Farm not only creates the “I remember that!” moment, but also the anticipation of “Who’s next?” It’s a good way to stick with a recurring theme without running the risk of over-saturation.
After all, can you imagine an entire campaign starring Rob Schneider as the “Richmeister?”
