Why I Love Local Advertising

Rainbow Cleaners is a local dry cleaner a few blocks away from my apartment. Every week I anxiously drive by their large channel letter sign in front of the store, excited to see what they’re going to hit me with. There was “Happy Hallowclean” last October. Then “Prom Clean” a few months ago. And my all-time favorite, “Not Lawyers, But Handle Suits”. Last week’s sign was dedicated to local Hamden celebrity, LA Kings (and USA Olympic) hockey goalie Jonathan Quick.

The sign changes constantly depending on the seasons, local events, national tragedies, weather, etc. That sign is as much a part of the community as the town green or local coffee shop. It’s advertising in its simplest, purest form – and it always brings a smile to my face and reminds me of why I pursued a career in this industry. In an attempt to impact the buying habits of consumers and businesses around the globe, we spend a great deal of time and energy developing well thought-out marketing strategies, media plans, and creative campaigns. It’s the responsible way to handle a client’s marketing investment, and it’s the only way to be successful on a national and global level. Still, it’s a lot of fun to see someone shooting from the hip every week and clearly having a lot of fun doing it!
