Retro Ad of the Week: Palisades Amusement Park, 1937

It’s not often we see amusement park posters showcasing a woman sunbathing (or “surf bathing”). But Palisades Amusement Park, which sat on the border of Cliffside Park and Fort Lee in New Jersey, was able to boast about more than just rides. One of their distinctive attractions was the “world’s largest” outdoor salt water pool. The Rosenthal Brothers, who owned the park for almost forty years, focused most of their advertising efforts targeting NYC youths via promos in comic books. With this poster, they took a different approach, casting their net a little wider.

FUN FACT: Several songs were written about Palisades Park during its 74-year history. Perhaps the most famous was the 1962 pop hit “Palisades Park” performed by Freddie “Boom Boom” Cannon. The song was written by none other than Chuck Barris of Gong Show fame. (Source: Palisades Amusement Park Historical Society)
