Hotels around the world go green.
As brands around the world embrace (or pretend to embrace) environmentally friendly policies and products, hotels are jumping on the bandwagon – and many of them are doing it right.
In February 2008, the Hyatt Regency Boston earned the ENERGY STAR award for its green efforts, which include the use of Ozone Water Technologies to significantly reduce the need for chemicals and eliminate the need for hot water in the hotel's laundry department.
The Orchard Garden Hotel in San Francisco – the only lodging choice in the city that was built to the nationally accepted standards of the U.S. Green Building Council – uses an innovative key card energy control system and provides eco-friendly guestrooms with organic bath products.
But these are just individual hotels. The Intercontinental Hotel Group is exploring options for a solar-powered Innovation Hotel, a prototype that has an entire website devoted to it. From the bed linens to the advanced rainwater harvesting system, Innovation Hotel is green to the core and may serve as a model for hotel builders around the globe.
